Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), which has its roots at Yarmouk University, was established on September 1, 1986 as an autonomous national institute of higher learning. In consequence five faculties were detached from Yarmouk to form an integral part of the University and instruction began in September 1986.

Since its foundation the University has witnessed rapid expansion: for the number of faculties rose from the five faculties to become ten including (56) academic departments offering (53) undergraduate programs and (74) graduate programs.

The students' numbers rose from (2300) students in the year 86/87 to more than ( 13000) students in the academic year 2002/2003 instructed by (600) faculty members compared with (110) in the year when the University was founded. The University has become a "home from home" for students from (41) foreign and Arab countries, all of which contribute to the varied cultural life on the University.

Under adverse canopy of 135,000 trees, the University Campus sits at 70 km north of Amman, the capital of Jordan, and 20 km east of Irbid City. The campus which covers 11 km2 features main buildings with total area of 355,000 m2 that were constructed according to the latest architectural designs confirming to the natures of its scientific faculties.

The campus also includes: the University farm, outstanding teaching and research facilities in the fields of computers, engineering, electronics, industry, environment and medicine that are complemented by cultural and recreational facilities: 12 auditoriums, a music hall, fine arts galleries, museums, 8 restaurants, housing complex, workshops, modern libraries, clinic, sports gyms, tennis courts, and football playground which include more than 7000 seats. Those facilities are linked with 160 km of illuminated modern roads.

The University recognizes its obligations to contribute to the development of human and material resources of Jordan through the proper pursuit of knowledge and the achievement of academic excellence. And in compliance with dictated objectives as contained in the constitution of the University, JUST endeavors to realize these ambitions, including:

  • Offering of specialized higher education in established and emerging disciplines of science and technology.
  • Preparation of properly trained human resources in areas of science and technology, with particular emphasis on quality programs.
  • Expansion of graduate studies, and support of scientific research and professional studies in the pursuit of promoting community service and bilateral links with industry.
  • And not least of all, the development of student personality traits of national pride and professional ethics via a balanced program of extracurricular activities envisaged to form an integral part of student life on campus.

Thus, JUST perseveres to develop and enhance its resources in order to successfully fulfill its intended mission, which resides in the accomplishments of three basic tasks of responsibility:

  • Provision of sound professional education and training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Provision for mission-oriented research in support of Jordan's national developmental plans.
  • Promoting interaction with the community through the provision of community service to Jordan and the region in response to changing and renewed demands.
