During the preparation of the Johannesburg earth Summit (February
2002), a group of distinguished water scientists sent a letter
to the Division for Sustainable Development, United Nations
entitled "A sustainable Sanitation is a key to Sustainable
Development". The letter states among others that sustainable
sanitation is:
Designed for low water consumption (demand side
management) and aims for full reuse of water and fertilisers.
Often decentralised and is capable to provide high performance
at low costs - user involvement and proper maintenance is a key
to success.
